Unit Objectives:
By the end of the unit, students will:
  • Compare major electoral systems (majoritarian, proportional, mixed) and their effects on representation and governance.
  • Analyze the role of political parties and interest groups in shaping policy and political engagement.
  • Evaluate the impact of democratic and authoritarian regimes on political participation.
  • Compare case studies of party systems and voter engagement across different countries.
  • Examine the relationship between political and economic changes in shaping governance and development.


Week 1: Electoral Systems and Their Effects
  • Day 1: Introduction to electoral systems (majoritarian, proportional, mixed)
    • Activity: Students simulate elections using different systems and discuss outcomes.
  • Day 2: Case studies of electoral systems (UK, Russia, Mexico)
    • Activity: Group presentations analyzing electoral rules and outcomes in assigned countries.
