The following activities include AI tools that enhance student engagement, provide data-driven insights, and facilitate personalized learning.
1. AI-Powered Style AnalysisObjective: Analyze and refine tone, diction, syntax, and imagery using AI tools.
Activity:
  • Students input a passage of their writing into an AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, or ProWritingAid).
  • They receive feedback on word choice, sentence variety, and overall tone.
  • Students revise their writing based on the AI's suggestions and reflect on whether the changes align with their intended rhetorical effect.
Extension: Compare AI-generated style suggestions to revisions made by peers.
2. AI as a Rhetorical TutorObjective: Experiment with different rhetorical techniques to enhance writing impact.
Activity:
  • Students provide AI with a paragraph from their essay and ask it to rewrite the passage in different rhetorical styles (e.g., more formal, humorous, persuasive).
  • They analyze how sentence structure, diction, and tone shift across versions.
  • As a class, discuss which techniques were most effective and why.
Extension: Students refine their own writing using insights gained from AI variations.
3. AI Sentence Variety ChallengeObjective: Improve sentence variety and pacing for rhetorical effectiveness.
Activity:
  • Students submit a short paragraph to an AI and ask it to generate variations with different sentence structures (e.g., compound, complex, cumulative, periodic).
  • They compare the AI's versions with their own revisions and discuss which structures best enhance clarity and impact.
Extension: Challenge students to rewrite a peer’s paragraph using strategic sentence variety.
4. Rhetorical Voice and AI MimicryObjective: Strengthen voice and personal style in writing.
Activity:
  • Students provide AI with a passage written in their style and ask it to generate a continuation.
  • They critique whether the AI captures their unique voice and make adjustments as needed.
  • Students also input famous rhetorical speeches and have AI mimic the style in an original paragraph.
Extension: Have students create a rhetorical "mashup" where they blend their own voice with that of a well-known rhetorician.
5. AI for Concision and ClarityObjective: Revise essays for clarity and conciseness.
Activity:
  • Students input a wordy passage into AI and ask for a more concise revision.
  • They compare the AI’s version to their own edits, determining which revisions best preserve meaning while improving readability.
  • As a class, discuss strategies for eliminating redundancy and improving precision.
Extension: Conduct a peer-editing workshop where students use AI to check their partner’s clarity and conciseness.
