Focus: Preparing for the AP English Language and Composition Exam
Unit Objectives
By the end of this unit, students will:
  1. Develop proficiency in multiple-choice strategies to analyze rhetorical strategies effectively.
  2. Enhance timed essay-writing skills for rhetorical analysis, argumentation, and synthesis.
  3. Engage in peer review and feedback to refine writing and improve analytical depth.
  4. Practice holistic test-taking strategies to build confidence and efficiency.


Week 1: Diagnostic Assessment & Multiple-Choice Strategies
Day 1: AP Exam Overview & Strategy Discussion
  • Activity:
    • Review the structure of the AP English Language exam (multiple-choice & free-response).
    • Discuss scoring rubrics for essays.
    • Analyze past high-scoring student samples.
Day 2–3: Multiple-Choice Strategies & Practice
  • Activity:
    • Mini-lessons on identifying rhetorical strategies, tone, and main ideas.
    • Timed multiple-choice practice (College Board released questions).
    • Reflection on answer choices and discussion of common pitfalls.
  • Assessment: Exit ticket—students identify two effective strategies they will use.


Week 2: Timed Writing—Rhetorical Analysis & Argumentation
Day 4–5: Rhetorical Analysis Essay Practice
  • Activity:
    • Analyze a past AP prompt.
    • Discuss rhetorical devices in an excerpt (e.g., ethos, pathos, logos, tone).
    • Timed Writing: 40-minute rhetorical analysis essay.
    • Peer review using AP rubric.

Day 6–7: Argumentative Essay Practice
  • Activity:
    • Review argument structures (claims, reasoning, evidence).

1. AI-Generated Multiple-Choice Practice
  • Objective: Improve students' ability to analyze rhetorical strategies in nonfiction texts.
  • Activity:
    • Use AI (e.g., ChatGPT or online question generators) to create custom multiple-choice questions based on past AP exam passages.
    • Have students train AI to generate more challenging or specific questions by refining prompts.
    • Conduct AI vs. Human Challenge: Compare AI-generated questions with official College Board questions and discuss question quality.
  • AI Tool Suggestions: ChatGPT (for question generation), Quillionz, or any AI-based MCQ generator.


2. AI-Enhanced Timed Essay Writing
  • Objective: Develop skills in rhetorical analysis, argumentation, and synthesis under timed conditions.
  • Activity:
    • Assign a timed essay prompt, and students draft their response within 40 minutes.
    • Use AI for:
      • Outlining support: Students input the prompt into AI and compare the AI’s suggested outline with their own.
      • Thesis refinement: AI provides feedback on clarity and strength of thesis statements.
      • Counterargument generation: AI suggests possible counterarguments for students’ arguments.
    • Students submit final essays after integrating AI-assisted refinements.

3. Peer Review & AI Feedback Combination
  • Objective: Strengthen students' revision and feedback skills.
  • Activity:
    • Students exchange essays for peer review using a rubric.
    • Before finalizing revisions, they run their essays through AI for:
      • Grammar and clarity checks
      • Tone and style suggestions
      • Evaluating rhetorical effectiveness
    • Compare human vs. AI feedback: Discuss what AI missed and why human feedback remains essential.
  • AI Tool Suggestions: ChatGPT, Grammarly, ProWritingAid.


4. AI-Supported Rhetorical Analysis Drills
  • Objective: Improve rhetorical analysis of various texts, including nontraditional sources.
  • Activity:
    • Students input a passage (speech, editorial, op-ed) into AI and ask it to identify rhetorical strategies.
    • Students evaluate AI’s analysis, correcting inaccuracies and adding deeper insights.
    • AI creates alternative rhetorical approaches for the same passage (e.g., "Rewrite this speech using more pathos-driven appeals").

5. AI-Generated Synthesis Practice
  • Objective: Improve evidence integration and source evaluation skills.
  • Activity:
    • AI generates a set of sources on a debate topic (e.g., social media and democracy).
    • Students evaluate AI’s sources: Are they credible? What perspectives are missing?
    • Students write a synthesis essay using AI-generated or real sources, ensuring diverse perspectives.
  • AI Tool Suggestions: Perplexity AI, Elicit (for source generation), ChatGPT.


Final Review Session: AI-Powered Mock Exam
  • Objective: Simulate the real AP Exam using AI tools for individualized feedback.
  • Activity:
    • Use AI to generate a full-length practice test or adapt existing AP practice questions.
    • AI provides instant feedback on essay responses, but students must critique and refine AI’s grading.
    • Hold a Q&A with AI where students ask for explanations on difficult multiple-choice questions.
  • AI Tool Suggestions: ChatGPT, Turnitin AI, AP Classroom (for official practice exams).
