Unit Breakdown:
1. Maritime Empires: European Exploration and Colonization (c. 1450–1750)
  • European motivations (God, Gold, Glory) and advancements in maritime technology
  • Establishment of Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, British, and French empires
  • Competition for global dominance (e.g., Treaty of Tordesillas, mercantilism)
  • Impact on indigenous populations and global trade networks
Activity Idea: AI-powered document analysis—students analyze and compare explorers’ accounts using AI-generated summaries.


2. The Columbian Exchange and Economic Systems
  • The exchange of crops, animals, diseases, and populations
  • The rise of mercantilism and early capitalism
  • Effects on global population growth and urbanization
  • Encomienda, mita, and other labor systems in the Americas

  • Objective: Students will use AI tools to analyze primary sources and create a simulated European exploration journal.
  • Process:
    1. Use an AI chatbot to generate accounts of exploration from different European perspectives (Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, English, French).
    2. Students prompt the AI to create journal entries from the viewpoint of explorers, indigenous peoples, or enslaved Africans.
    3. Compare AI-generated content with primary sources (e.g., Columbus’ logs, Zheng He’s records).
    4. Reflect: How does AI’s interpretation compare to historical sources? What biases are present?


2. Columbian Exchange, Economic Systems, and Forced Labor

  • Process:

    2. Students prompt AI to categorize goods (food, disease, animals, labor systems) and predict economic shifts in Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
    3. Debate: Did the Columbian Exchange create more benefits or destruction? How did forced labor shape economic systems?

    2. Use AI to generate simulated first-person resistance letters or speeches from the perspective of leaders like Queen Nzinga, Tupac Amaru II, or the Taíno.

    4. Reflect: What themes of resistance appear across cultures? How does AI’s output reflect or distort historical agency?


4. Revolutions (c. 1750–c. 1900)
Activity: AI Debate on Enlightenment & Revolutions
  • Objective: Use AI chatbots to role-play debates between Enlightenment thinkers and revolutionary leaders.
  • Process:
    1. Assign students figures like Locke, Rousseau, Toussaint Louverture, Bolívar, or Robespierre.
    2. Have AI generate speeches or arguments based on historical writings.
    3. Conduct a debate: Should revolutions be radical or moderate? What role do economic and political grievances play?
    4. Reflect: How did AI capture historical ideologies? Where did it fail?
