Reading and Writing Workshop
Unit Title: Modern and Contemporary British Literature 1901 to Present

Unit Overview
​
This unit explores the major literary movements and themes of twentieth and twenty first century British literature. Students will engage with modernist and postmodernist experimentation, war literature, existentialist themes, postcolonial narratives, and feminist and dystopian perspectives. Through close reading, analysis, and discussion, students will develop an understanding of how literature reflects and critiques the evolving British and global landscape.

Activity
Students will input a passage from Mrs Dalloway into an AI powered text analysis tool to identify shifts in perspective stream of consciousness narration and key themes
For 1984 students will ask AI to generate alternative endings based on key themes in the novel and discuss how these compare to Orwells vision
Assessment
Students write a reflection on how AI interprets stream of consciousness or dystopian themes and whether the AI analysis aligns with their own interpretations

AI Generated Poetry ComparisonText Poetry by W B Yeats and Seamus Heaney
AI Tool AI Poetry Generator or ChatGPT
Activity
Students will use AI to generate a poem in the style of Yeats or Heaney based on a selected theme such as war identity or history
They will then compare the AI generated poem to an original poem by Yeats or Heaney discussing differences in style tone and meaning
Assessment
Students write a short analysis comparing the AI generated poem to the original focusing on literary devices and thematic depth

AI Assisted Literary DebateText 1984 and The Bloody Chamber
AI Tool AI Debate Generator or ChatGPT
Activity
Students will use AI to generate arguments for and against a controversial literary question such as Does 1984 accurately predict the dangers of surveillance in modern society or Does Angela Carters retelling of fairy tales successfully challenge traditional gender roles
Students will then engage in a structured debate using AI generated responses as a starting point and adding their own insights
Assessment
Students submit a debate reflection discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the AI generated arguments and how they refined their own reasoning

AI Driven Modernization of Classic TextsText The Waste Land excerpts and The Bloody Chamber excerpts
AI Tool AI Text Rewriting Tool or ChatGPT
Activity
Students will input an excerpt from The Waste Land or The Bloody Chamber into an AI tool and ask it to rewrite the passage in a modern setting or style
They will analyze how the meaning changes when the language structure or cultural references are updated
Assessment
Students will present a comparison between the original and AI rewritten text discussing what is lost and gained in translation and whether the modernized version maintains the original themes

AI Powered Global Literature ExplorationText Postcolonial literature perspectives related to Heaney or Carter
AI Tool AI Summarization or Translation Tool
Activity
Students will use AI to find and summarize a contemporary British or postcolonial literary work that reflects similar themes to Heaneys poetry or The Bloody Chamber
They will present their findings comparing how global perspectives influence themes of identity history or feminism
Assessment
Students create a comparative analysis between their selected global text and one from the unit highlighting how literature evolves in a globalized world
