Comprehensive Creative Writing Unit Culminating in: Portfolio Piece #7 — An Experimental or Hybrid Creative Work

Activities

Teaching with E.L.O.N.  (Enriched Learning Opportunity Nexus) that seamlessly integrates AI
UNIT OVERVIEW
Unit 7 pushes students beyond traditional genre boundaries. They explore experimental forms, nonlinear structures, hybrid genres, collage writing, and multimodal composition. Students study unconventional public-domain texts, practice risk-taking techniques, and produce a polished experimental or hybrid piece for their Creative Writing Portfolio.
This unit encourages innovation, boldness, and creative play.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
  1. How can writers break traditional rules to create new meaning?
  2. What makes writing “experimental”?
  3. How does form influence a reader’s emotional or intellectual experience?
  4. How can multiple genres blend into a single cohesive piece?
  5. What risks are worth taking as a writer?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
  • Explore nonlinear narrative structures
  • Write hybrid forms (prose-poetry, lists, letters, mixed media)
  • Use fragmentation, repetition, and juxtaposition to create meaning
  • Analyze unconventional mentor texts
  • Draft, revise, and polish original experimental pieces
  • Add Portfolio Piece #7 to their Creative Writing Portfolio

MENTOR TEXTS (PUBLIC DOMAIN)
Experimental Prose:
  • Gertrude Stein — Tender Buttons
    https://www.gutenberg.org/files/15396/15396-h/15396-h.htm
Surreal / Nonlinear Narrative:
  • Arthur Rimbaud — Illuminations
    https://www.gutenberg.org/files/16807/16807-h/16807-h.htm
Prose-Poetry & Hybrid Voice:
  • Walt Whitman — Leaves of Grass (selected passages)

DAY 1 — Introduction to Experimental Writing
Mini-Lesson: “What Does It Mean to Break the Rules?”
Teach:
Experimental writing:
  • breaks expectations
  • plays with language
  • disrupts structure
  • blends genres
  • prioritizes effect over convention
Read: Short sections from Tender Buttons.
Discuss: What rules are being broken?
Activity:
Students rewrite a simple paragraph in an experimental style:
  • fragmented
  • nonlinear
  • highly rhythmic
  • or image-driven
Independent:
Draft an experimental paragraph.
Portfolio:
Save as Appendix entry.

DAY 2 — Fragmentation & Nonlinear Structure
Mini-Lesson: “Meaning Through Gaps”
Teach:
Fragmentation can create:
  • mystery
  • tension
  • emotional resonance
  • multiple interpretations
Group Activity:
Students arrange fragmented sentences in different orders to see how meaning shifts.
Independent Writing:
Write a nonlinear scene that jumps in time or perspective.

DAY 3 — Prose-Poetry & Hybrid Paragraphs
Mini-Lesson: “When Prose Becomes Poetic”
Teach:
Hybrid writing blends elements of:
  • poetry
  • narrative
  • essay
  • memoir
Read passages from Whitman or Rimbaud.
Activity:
Students create a prose-poem combining imagery with paragraph structure.
Portfolio:
Candidate for final experimental piece.

DAY 4 — Repetition, Pattern & Sonic Texture
Mini-Lesson: “The Music of Experimentation”
Teach:
Repetition, alliteration, and assonance can shape rhythm and mood.
Group Activity:
Rewrite an ordinary sentence with intentional musicality.
Independent:
Revise yesterday’s prose-poem with added sonic texture.

DAY 5 — Juxtaposition & Unexpected Pairings
Mini-Lesson: “Place Disparate Images Together”
Teach:
Juxtaposition creates:
  • contrast
  • surprise
  • thematic tension
Guided Practice:
Students pick two unrelated items (e.g., a lemon and a warship) and write 10–12 lines connecting them.
Independent Work:
Expand into a surreal or symbolic scene.

DAY 6 — Collage Writing: Lists, Letters, and Found Text
Mini-Lesson: “Writing as Assembly”
Teach:
Hybrid pieces might include:
  • lists
  • letters
  • receipts
  • diary entries
  • overheard conversations
  • fake documents
  • news clippings
Activity:
Students assemble a “written collage” from 3–5 forms.
Independent:
Draft a hybrid collage scene.
Portfolio:
Possible candidate for Unit 7 piece.

DAY 7 — Visual & Spatial Poetry
Mini-Lesson: “Meaning Through Shape”
Teach:
Visual poetry uses:
  • spacing
  • indentation
  • shape on the page
  • unconventional formatting
Read examples of early shape poems or stylized free verse.
Independent:
Create a visual poem or experimental layout.

DAY 8 — Building a Cohesive Experimental Piece
Mini-Lesson: “Experiment with Purpose”
Teach:
Even wild writing benefits from:
  • cohesion
  • recurring imagery
  • thematic consistency
  • intentional choices
Students choose one of the following forms to develop:
  • prose poem
  • fragmented narrative
  • collage writing
  • hybrid letter-story
  • visual poem
  • list-story
Independent:
Draft Experimental Piece Draft #1 (1–3 pages).

DAY 9 — Revision through Expansion & Compression
Mini-Lesson: “Make Choices That Sharpen Impact”
Teach:
Revision includes:
  • expanding strong sections
  • cutting weak ones
  • rearranging fragments
  • clarifying theme
Peer Review:
Partners focus on:
  • clarity of intention
  • strongest image
  • confusing sections
  • rhythmic flow
Independent:
Revise into Draft #2.

DAY 10 — Polishing Experimental Writing
Mini-Lesson: “Fine-Tuning Form, Voice, and Layout”
Teach:
Editing experimental writing focuses on:
  • consistency
  • readability
  • flow
  • intentional formatting
Independent:
Finalize Portfolio Piece #7.

DAY 11 — Sharing & Interpretation Circles
Mini-Lesson: “Experimental Writing Invites Multiple Readings”
Students share pieces in small groups and discuss:
  • What emotions did the piece evoke?
  • What choices surprised you?
  • What lines stayed with you?
Independent Reflection:
“What did I learn about my creative boundaries?”

DAY 12 — Unit 7 Portfolio Assembly
Students compile Unit 7 materials:
