The following activities include AI tools that enhance student engagement, provide data-driven insights, and facilitate personalized learning.

Week 1: Sensory Language & Introduction to Description
Group AI Activity – Sensory Brainstorm with AI
  • Students input a basic scene prompt (e.g., "a walk in the park") into ChatGPT and ask it to describe the scene using each of the five senses.
  • In groups, they evaluate the response, highlight sensory language, and compare it with their own observations from the classroom or playground.
Individual AI Activity – AI-Prompted Descriptive Practice
  • Students choose an object (e.g., a fruit or a shoe), and ask ChatGPT to generate a short description using all five senses. They then write their own version and compare both.

Week 2: Nouns and Adjectives in Descriptive Writing
Group AI Activity – Word Sorting Challenge
  • Students paste a descriptive paragraph into ChatGPT and ask it to identify and color-code all nouns and adjectives.
  • Then, they work together to create a new paragraph using different but equally descriptive nouns/adjectives suggested by ChatGPT.
Individual AI Activity – “Adjective Builder” Tool
  • Students input a simple noun (e.g., “tree”) into ChatGPT and ask: “Can you describe a [tree] using five unique adjectives for different moods (e.g., spooky, peaceful)?”
  • Students use the list to write five different sentences showing emotional tone through adjectives.

Week 3: Verbs in Vivid Description
Group AI Activity – Verb Upgrade Station
  • Students input weak sentences into ChatGPT (e.g., “The boy went to the store.”) and ask it to generate vivid versions.
  • They analyze multiple versions from the AI and decide which verb choices are most effective and why.
Individual AI Activity – Verb Match Challenge
  • Students list ten simple verbs (e.g., run, walk, eat) and ask ChatGPT to provide synonyms ranked by intensity.
  • They use these in a short descriptive paragraph showing different levels of action.

Week 4: Weather and Describing the Sky
Group AI Activity – Weather Description Generator
  • Groups input a type of weather (e.g., “thunderstorm,” “snowstorm”) into ChatGPT and ask it to write a paragraph using sensory and emotional language.
  • Students illustrate or annotate the AI’s paragraph and present it along with their own rewritten version.
Individual AI Activity – My Weather Forecast
  • Students ask ChatGPT: “Write a weather report for a rainy day in a forest.”
  • They then write and record their own audio weather report based on AI vocabulary models, using free audio recording software like Vocaroo or SpeakPipe.

Week 5: Figurative Language – Simile and Metaphor
Group AI Activity – Simile/Metaphor Generator
  • Students brainstorm a list of nature items (clouds, trees, rivers) and ask ChatGPT: “Can you create three similes and three metaphors for [item]?”
  • Groups vote on the most creative and explain why.
Individual AI Activity – Figurative Language Challenge
  • Students input a paragraph of their own writing and ask ChatGPT to identify literal sentences that could be improved with figurative language.
  • They revise the sentences using metaphors or similes and share before/after versions.

Week 6: Descriptive Paragraph Writing Workshop

Group AI Activity – Peer Edit with AI Feedback
  • In small groups, students each input their rough draft paragraphs into ChatGPT with the prompt: “Can you help me revise this paragraph to improve clarity, vocabulary, and grammar?”
  • They compare the AI-suggested edits and vote on what to keep or reject using a revision checklist.
Individual AI Activity – Vocabulary Enhancement
  • Students copy their draft into ChatGPT and ask: “Which words could I replace with more vivid or specific vocabulary?”
  • They choose 3–5 suggestions to improve word choice and rewrite their paragraph.

Week 7: Poetry CollageGroup AI Activity – Visual Poetry Collage Generator
  • Students take lines from selected nature poems and use an AI image generator (e.g., DALL·E or Bing Image Creator) to create an image inspired by each line.
  • They compile the images into a visual collage and present how the imagery matches the poet’s language.
Individual AI Activity – Line Rewriting Practice
  • Students input a favorite line from a poem and ask: “Can you rewrite this line in three different styles (formal, emotional, humorous)?”
  • They use one of the rewritten lines as a caption for their own collage element.

Week 8: Culminating Project – My World Through DescriptionGroup AI Activity – Multimedia Slide Presentation
  • Students create a Google Slides or Canva presentation based on their final descriptive writing piece.
  • They use ChatGPT to generate a title, subheadings, and transitions, and use AI-generated images to illustrate key scenes.
