Student Course Review:  English Language Development

Instructions--This guide helps you review everything you’ve learned this year in English Language Development. Use it to study, reflect, and show what you remember from each unit. Try to answer the questions in complete sentences and use vocabulary from the unit when you can.

Unit 1: Building a Foundation
Theme: Identity and Community
Review Questions:

1. What are three ways to introduce yourself in English?
2. What are some classroom expressions you’ve learned?
3. Write three sentences about yourself using the sentence frame: “I am ___, I like ___, and I live in ___.”
4. What did you write in your “All About Me” booklet?
5. How did you feel speaking English in the first weeks of school?

Unit 2: Describing the World
Theme: Observation and Description
Review Questions:

1. What are adjectives? Give five examples from your writing.
2. Describe today’s weather using at least two sensory details.
3. What is one poem or descriptive paragraph you remember writing?
4. Choose a noun and write a sentence that includes an adjective and a verb.
5. What is something you see every day that you could describe in more detail?

Unit 3: Story Elements and Structure
Theme: Storytelling Across Cultures
Review Questions:

1. What are the five parts of a story? (Hint: plot structure)
2. Choose a folktale we read and describe the main character.
3. What is a lesson or theme from one of the stories we studied?
4. What did you include in your own story or fable?
5. How do stories from different cultures help us learn about others?

Unit 4: Informational Texts and Research
Theme: Discovering the World
Review Questions:

1. What is the main idea of an article, and how do you find it?
2. Choose an article we read and list three supporting details.
3. What is one fact you learned from your research project?
4. What are some text features in nonfiction? (Example: heading, chart, caption)
5. What topic would you like to research next?

Unit 5: Argument and Persuasion
Theme: Voice and Choice
Review Questions:

1. What is the difference between a fact and an opinion?
2. Write a persuasive sentence about your favorite food.
3. What reasons and evidence did you use in your persuasive letter?
4. How do we listen respectfully during a class debate?
5. What is something you would like to change at school, and why?

Unit 6: Language in Action
