Grammar Unit 10

Unit Title: Mastering Phrases and Clauses
Objective: By the end of the unit, students will be able to identify, analyze, and effectively use different types of phrases and clauses in their writing.  Review unit 6 on prepositional phrases.
Unit Goals:
  1. Recognize and identify different types of phrases and clauses.
  2. Analyze how phrases and clauses function within sentences.
  3. Apply knowledge of phrases and clauses to improve sentence variety in writing.
  4. Edit and revise writing to incorporate a variety of phrases for fluency and effectiveness.
Week 1: Introduction to Phrases
Lesson 1: What is a Phrase?
  • Define phrase and distinguish it from clauses.
  • Identify noun phrases, verb phrases, prepositional phrases as a foundation.
  • Activity: Sentence deconstruction – students highlight phrases in sample texts.
  • Homework: Identify different types of phrases in a paragraph from a novel or article.
Lesson 2: Adjective & Adverb Phrases
  • Define and explore adjective phrases (modify nouns) and adverb phrases (modify verbs, adjectives, or adverbs).
  • Model examples from literature.
  • Activity: Students rewrite sentences, replacing simple adjectives/adverbs with phrases.
  • Assessment: Quick quiz – identify and use adjective/adverb phrases in sentences.
Week 2: Verbals – Participles & Gerunds
Lesson 3: Participles & Participial Phrases
  • Define participles (present: -ing / past: -ed, -en) and their function as adjectives.
  • Introduce participial phrases with examples from fiction and nonfiction.
  • Activity: Students expand simple sentences using participial phrases.
  • Group Work: Create a collaborative story using participial phrases.
  • Homework: Revise a past piece of writing, incorporating participial phrases.
Lesson 4: Gerunds & Gerund Phrases
  • Define gerunds (-ing form acting as a noun).
  • Discuss the different roles gerunds play (subject, object, complement).
  • Activity: Sentence transformations – convert infinitives/verbs into gerunds.
  • Writing Prompt: Write a short paragraph about a hobby, using at least three gerund phrases.
  • Assessment: Exit ticket – Identify gerunds and gerund phrases in sample sentences.
Week 3: Infinitives & Clauses
Lesson 5: Infinitives & Infinitive Phrases
  • Define infinitives (to + verb) and their functions (noun, adjective, adverb).
  • Compare infinitive phrases to gerund phrases.
  • Activity: Convert sentences from gerunds to infinitives and vice versa.
  • Writing Challenge: Craft a persuasive argument using infinitive phrases effectively.
Lesson 6: Dependent & Independent Clauses
  • Define independent vs. dependent clauses.
  • Discuss adjective, adverb, and noun clauses.
  • Activity: Mix and match clause types to create complex sentences.
  • Assessment: Sentence diagramming exercise.
Week 4: Application & Synthesis
Lesson 7: Writing with Variety
  • Mini-lesson: Revising for sentence variety using phrases and clauses.
  • Workshop: Students revise a previous essay or story, incorporating a mix of phrases.
Lesson 8: Creative Writing Project
  • Students write a 1-2 page creative story, incorporating all types of phrases and at least one dependent clause.
  • Peer review & feedback session.
Lesson 9: Final Assessment & Reflection
  • Students complete a summative assessment:
    • Identify phrases and clauses in a passage.
    • Rewrite sentences to improve variety.
    • Write a short reflection on how their writing has improved.
  • Class discussion: How does understanding grammar help with writing clarity?

  2. AI highlights key phrases and clauses.

  1. Each group writes a simple paragraph about hobbies.

Week 3: Infinitives & Clauses
Activity 5: AI Rewrite – Infinitives vs. Gerunds (Individual)

  1. Students input a paragraph into AI and ask it to rewrite using infinitive phrases instead of gerunds.

  1. AI generates a basic story with simple sentences.
