Unit Plan: Enhancing Writing with Prepositions
Unit Focus: Understanding and using prepositions to improve clarity, flow, and descriptive quality in writing.
Unit Objectives:
By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and correctly use prepositions in sentences.
  2. Understand how prepositions affect meaning, tone, and structure in writing.
  3. Analyze how prepositions function in literature, poetry, and persuasive texts.
  4. Apply prepositional phrases to enhance sentence variety and imagery in creative and academic writing.
Week 1: Foundations of Prepositions
Day 1: Introduction to Prepositions
  • Objective: Define and identify prepositions and prepositional phrases.
  • Activities:
    • Engage students with a "Preposition Hunt" (find prepositions in song lyrics, poetry, and short passages).
    • Direct instruction on common prepositions and their relationships (place, time, direction, cause, manner).
    • Group activity: Sort prepositions into categories (spatial, temporal, logical).
    • Homework: Find and underline prepositions in a page of a novel they are reading.
Day 2: The Role of Prepositions in Meaning & Clarity
  • Objective: Analyze how prepositions modify meaning in writing.
  • Activities:
    • Compare sentences with and without prepositions (e.g., She sat the chair vs. She sat on the chair).
