Lesson 3: Opportunity Cost
Objectives:
  • Define opportunity cost and trade-offs
  • Analyze how individuals and businesses make decisions based on costs and benefits
  • Evaluate the concept of marginal thinking in decision-making
Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.2: Determine central ideas of a source and summarize
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.WHST.11-12.1: Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content
Activities:
  • Decision-making simulation: Students make choices and analyze opportunity costs
  • Debate: What are the opportunity costs of college versus entering the workforce
  • Graphic organizer: Cost-benefit analysis of a major decision

Lesson 4: Production Possibilities Graphs
Objectives:
  • Explain the purpose and function of a production possibilities curve
  • Interpret points on the curve, including efficiency, underutilization, and unattainable production
  • Analyze real-world scenarios using production possibilities graphs
Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.7: Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.ID.B.6: Represent data using graphs
Activities:
  • Create and interpret production possibilities graphs
  • Analyze how shifts in resources affect the economy
  • Real-world example: How war or natural disasters affect an economy’s production possibilities

Lesson 5: Economic Systems
Objectives:
  • Compare traditional, command, market, and mixed economies
  • Explain how different economic systems answer the three key economic questions
  • Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each system
Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.3: Evaluate various explanations for actions or events
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.WHST.11-12.2: Write explanatory texts to convey complex ideas
Activities:
  • Compare economies of different countries using research
  • Class discussion: Which economic system is best and why
  • Simulation: Students create their own economic system and defend its structure

Lesson 6: The Free Market

Objectives:
  • Define and explain the characteristics of a free market economy
  • Describe the role of competition, supply and demand, and consumer choice
  • Analyze the benefits and challenges of a free market system
Common Core Standards:
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.9: Compare and contrast treatments of the same topic in primary and secondary sources
  • CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.WHST.11-12.1: Write arguments with supporting evidence
Activities:
  • Case study: The role of competition in different industries
  • Debate: Should government regulate free markets
  • Research project: The role of supply and demand in pricing

Assessment and Evaluation:
  • Formative Assessments:
    • Exit tickets
    • Class discussions
    • Graphic organizers
  • Summative Assessments:
    • Unit test with multiple-choice and short-answer questions
    • Argumentative essay on an economic issue
    • Group presentations comparing economic systems
This unit provides a strong foundation in economic principles while developing critical thinking, literacy, and research skills.
The following activities include AI tools that enhance student engagement, provide data-driven insights, and facilitate personalized learning.
Activity 1
AI Activity: AI-Powered Economic Predictions
  • Tool: ChatGPT, Google Bard, or other AI models
  • Activity:
    • Students prompt an AI model with economic questions like "How does inflation impact consumers?" or "What are the biggest economic challenges today?"
    • They compare AI responses with textbook definitions and real-world examples.
    • Students write a short reflection on whether AI explanations align with economic principles.

Activity 2: Scarcity and Factors of Production
AI Activity: AI Resource Allocation Simulation
  • Tool: AI-driven simulation games like SimCity, Econland, or Google Sheets with AI-generated datasets
  • Activity:
    • Students use an AI simulation to manage resources (land, labor, capital, entrepreneurship) in a simulated economy.
    • AI suggests strategies based on input constraints (e.g., "You have limited resources. How should you allocate them?").
    • Students analyze the results and discuss how scarcity affects decision-making.

 Activity 3: Opportunity Cost
AI Activity: AI-Powered Decision-Making Assistant
  • Tool: ChatGPT or Decision Tree AI
  • Activity:
    • Students enter real-life choices into an AI (e.g., "Should I go to college or start a business?")
    • AI generates pros, cons, and opportunity costs for each option.
    • Students compare AI-generated opportunity costs with their own reasoning.
    • Class discussion: Can AI replace human decision-making?

 Activity 4: Production Possibilities Graphs
AI Activity: AI-Generated Economic Graphs
  • Tool: Google Sheets AI features, Desmos Graphing Calculator, or Python coding in Google Colab
  • Activity:
    • Students input economic data (e.g., capital vs. consumer goods production).
    • AI tools generate Production Possibilities Curves (PPCs) to visualize trade-offs.
    • Students manipulate variables and predict how shifts in resources impact the curve.
    • AI-generated questions prompt critical thinking: "What happens if labor productivity doubles?"

 Activity 5: Economic Systems
AI Activity: AI Country Comparison
  • Tool: AI-driven research tools like Perplexity.ai or ChatGPT
  • Activity:
    • Students prompt AI to compare the economies of two countries (e.g., "Compare the U.S. and China’s economic systems").
    • AI generates a side-by-side analysis of market vs. command economies.
    • Students fact-check AI responses using reliable sources and present findings.
    • Debate: "Which system is more efficient?"

 Activity 6: The Free Market
AI Activity: AI Market Trends Analyzer
  • Tool: Google Trends, AI-powered stock market simulators (like Investopedia's simulator), or ChatGPT
  • Activity:
    • Students use AI tools to analyze supply and demand trends for real-world products (e.g., electric cars, smartphones).
    • AI generates predictions about future demand based on past data.
    • Students write a mini-report on how businesses respond to supply and demand shifts.

Final AI Integration: AI-Powered Assessment Review
  • Tool: ChatGPT, Quizlet AI, or Kahoot AI
  • Activity:
    • Students use AI to generate practice quiz questions and take AI-created practice tests.
    • AI provides explanations for incorrect answers.
    • Students refine their understanding before the summative assessment.

These AI-integrated activities enhance critical thinking, research skills, and data analysis, making economics more engaging and relevant
