The following activities include AI tools that enhance student engagement, provide data-driven insights, and facilitate personalized learning.

Week 1: Immigration Patterns from 1970s to Present
Group Activity: AI-Generated Migration Timeline & Infographic
  • AI Tool: Canva (with AI Magic Design) or Adobe Express with AI template generator
  • Description: In groups, students will research immigration trends from Latin America, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. They will use Canva's AI-powered design features to create a migration timeline and infographic illustrating migration trends, key events, and push/pull factors since the 1970s.
  • AI Integration: AI will help automatically generate design layouts, suggest icons, and format content based on student input.
Individual Activity: AI-Assisted Map Annotation
  • AI Tool: Google Bard or ChatGPT with Maps Plugin
  • Description: Students will generate AI-assisted annotations for a digital map of migration routes from selected regions. They will prompt the AI to help summarize regional conflicts, economic drivers, and refugee pathways.
  • AI Integration: AI will help provide concise historical context for map labels and pop-ups.

Week 2: Refugee Resettlement and U.S. Policy
Group Activity: AI-Powered Case Study Builder
  • AI Tool: ChatGPT or Perplexity AI
  • Description: Groups will select a refugee group (e.g., Vietnamese, Cuban, Somali, Syrian) and use AI to help structure a detailed case study. Students will prompt the AI to help outline the history, causes, U.S. response, and challenges faced during resettlement.
  • AI Integration: AI will assist in organizing research and generating initial drafts for case study narratives.
Individual Activity: AI-Facilitated Refugee Testimony Creation
  • AI Tool: Character.AI or ChatGPT (roleplay mode)
  • Description: Students will use AI to co-create fictionalized, historically grounded refugee testimonies based on real events. They will input historical details and instruct AI to generate a first-person account (e.g., a Somali refugee arriving in Minnesota).
  • AI Integration: AI will help develop authentic voice and emotional tone while ensuring historical accuracy.

Week 3: Undocumented Immigration and Border Policies
Group Activity: AI-Driven Policy Debate Simulation
  • AI Tool: ChatGPT Debate Coach or Google's Gemini AI
  • Description: Groups will be split into teams representing pro-immigration reform advocates, policymakers, law enforcement, and humanitarian organizations. Using AI, they will generate arguments, counterarguments, and opening/closing statements based on historical and contemporary policies like DACA or the Secure Fence Act.
  • AI Integration: AI will serve as a brainstorming partner, helping to refine debate points and suggest evidence-based arguments.
Individual Activity: AI-Powered Policy Analysis Report
  • AI Tool: Elicit.org (AI research tool) or Scite.ai
  • Description: Students will select one U.S. immigration or border policy (e.g., IRCA, DACA) and use AI tools to locate peer-reviewed studies, articles, and data to complete a brief report evaluating the policy's impact.
  • AI Integration: AI research tools will assist in finding high-quality academic and policy sources efficiently.

Week 4: Immigration and Globalization

Group Activity: AI-Generated Podcast or Video Project
  • AI Tool: Descript (AI-powered podcast and video editing)
  • Description: Groups will produce a short podcast or video exploring how globalization has influenced modern immigration (e.g., diaspora communities, remittances). AI will assist with automatic transcription, editing, and voice enhancement.
  • AI Integration: Descript's AI will speed up post-production by removing filler words, generating captions, and improving audio clarity.
Individual Activity: AI-Assisted Media Literacy Analysis
  • AI Tool: GPT-based AI image and text analyzer (e.g., ChatGPT Vision or Microsoft Copilot)
  • Description: Students will select news articles and visual media on contemporary immigration and use AI to help analyze bias, framing, and tone. They will prompt AI to identify emotional appeals, patterns, and potential stereotypes.
  • AI Integration: AI will guide students through media analysis frameworks (e.g., bias detection, fact-checking).

Ongoing (Throughout the Unit)AI-Enhanced Current Events Journal (Individual)
  • AI Tool: Notion AI or ChatGPT with journal prompts
  • Description: Students will maintain a weekly current events journal using AI to help generate reflective prompts, synthesize articles, and track trends in immigration news.
