 AP U.S. Government FRQ Rubric

 1. Thesis/Argument Development (0-2 points)
- 2 points: The response presents a clear, well-developed thesis that directly answers the question. It provides a detailed and accurate argument that is fully focused on the prompt.
- 1 point: The response presents a thesis, but it may be unclear, partially developed, or somewhat off-topic. The argument may not fully address all aspects of the question.
- 0 points: The response does not present a thesis or the thesis is irrelevant, incorrect, or does not address the question.

 2. Use of Evidence (0-3 points)
- 3 points: The response provides multiple specific pieces of relevant evidence from the course content (e.g., key political concepts, Supreme Court cases, constitutional principles, etc.) that support the argument. The evidence is well-integrated into the response.
- 2 points: The response includes some relevant evidence but may be missing a key piece or have only limited support for the argument. Evidence may be presented but not fully explained or applied to the argument.
- 1 point: The response includes limited or vague evidence that does not clearly support the argument or may not directly address the question.
- 0 points: The response provides no relevant evidence or evidence that is entirely inaccurate.

 3. Analysis and Reasoning (0-3 points)
- 3 points: The response demonstrates a sophisticated analysis that connects evidence to the argument, explaining how and why the evidence supports the claim. Clear reasoning is used throughout.
- 2 points: The response includes analysis that connects evidence to the argument, but the reasoning may not be fully developed or may lack depth in places.
- 1 point: The response provides some analysis, but it is superficial, vague, or does not clearly connect the evidence to the argument.
- 0 points: The response lacks analysis or reasoning, with little or no explanation of how evidence supports the argument.

 4. Counterarguments or Alternative Perspectives (0-2 points)
- 2 points: The response acknowledges a relevant counterargument or alternative perspective, clearly explaining why it is less valid or less compelling than the main argument.
- 1 point: The response addresses a counterargument or alternative perspective, but the discussion may be brief, underdeveloped, or insufficiently connected to the main argument.
- 0 points: The response does not acknowledge or engage with counterarguments or alternative perspectives.

 5. Organization and Clarity (0-2 points)
- 2 points: The response is well-organized, with a clear and logical structure that enhances the clarity of the argument. Transitions are smooth, and the response is easy to follow.
- 1 point: The response has some organizational structure, but may be unclear or lack logical flow in places. Some parts may be confusing or disjointed.
- 0 points: The response is poorly organized, making it difficult to follow the argument. The structure may be incoherent or the response lacks clarity.

 6. Writing Conventions (0-1 point)
- 1 point: The response demonstrates good writing conventions, including proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. The response is free from distracting errors.
- 0 points: The response contains frequent or distracting errors in grammar, punctuation, or spelling, affecting the clarity of the response.

 Total Possible Points: 12

 Notes on Scoring:
- Points are awarded incrementally, based on the depth and quality of the response.
- An excellent response will fully address the question with a clear argument, specific evidence, insightful analysis, and proper organization and writing conventions.
