Bless Me Ultima Reading & Writing Workshop (Literary Focus)
Introduction / Setup
Rudolfo Anaya’s Bless Me, Ultima tells the coming-of-age story of Antonio Márez y Luna as he navigates questions of faith, identity, family, and culture in 1940s New Mexico. Guided by Ultima, a curandera (healer), Antonio learns to reconcile conflicting worlds — Catholicism and Indigenous spirituality, innocence and experience, tradition and change.
Students will study the novel as a work of magical realism and symbolic storytelling, analyzing Anaya’s use of imagery, symbolism, motif, irony, and theme. They will also explore how narration, tone, and mythic structure develop meaning and reflect cultural identity. Students should use the Literary Thinking Guide as they read the novel.

Workshop ObjectiveStudents will analyze how Rudolfo Anaya uses literary elements — including magical realism, symbolism, motif, imagery, irony, and theme — to explore identity, faith, and moral growth. Through analytical and creative writing, students will interpret how literary craft and cultural context intertwine in Bless Me, Ultima.

- Chapters 8–13 (school experiences, Lupito’s death, growing conflicts)
- Chapters 14–19 (dreams, the Golden Carp, questions of belief and morality)
- Chapters 20–22 (Ultima’s death and Antonio’s spiritual resolution)
- Chapters 1–7 (Ultima’s arrival and Antonio’s early visions)
- Each group summarizes its section, identifies literary devices, and explains how they advance theme or character.
- Students use a Literary Thinking Guide to track symbols, motifs, magical realism, and conflicts.
- After each section, students complete a focused writing task tied to a literary term.

- Objective: Explore how Anaya blends realism and the supernatural through Antonio’s narration and vivid imagery.
- Key Terms: Point of view, imagery, magical realism, tone, foreshadowing.
- Reading Focus: Ch. 1–7 (Ultima’s arrival, the river, Antonio’s first dreams, and the owl’s symbolism).
- Writing Prompt: Write a short descriptive scene using magical realism, where ordinary life merges with mystery or spirituality. Identify two literary devices (imagery, tone, or symbolism) you used.
Session 2: Symbolism, Conflict, and Irony (Ch. 8–13)
- Objective: Analyze how symbols and conflicts reveal Antonio’s moral and spiritual awakening.
- Key Terms: Symbolism, conflict (internal/external), irony, motif.
- Reading Focus: Ch. 8–13 (Lupito’s death, the priesthood vs. the vaquero life, and Ultima’s guidance).
- Writing Prompt: Write a two-paragraph analysis of Lupito’s death or the owl as a symbol. How does Anaya use irony and conflict to shape Antonio’s understanding of good and evil?
Session 3: Motif, Theme, and Mythic Structure (Ch. 14–19)
- Objective: Examine recurring motifs and mythic patterns that shape Antonio’s spiritual growth.
- Key Terms: Motif, theme, archetype, allegory, imagery.
- Reading Focus: Ch. 14–19 (the Golden Carp, the Virgin of Guadalupe, dreams about Ultima and sin).
- Writing Prompt: Write a short essay comparing the Golden Carp and the Catholic God as symbols. How does Anaya use motif and archetype to explore the theme of belief?
Session 4: Theme, Resolution, and Symbolic Closure (Ch. 20–22)
- Objective: Connect the novel’s ending to its overarching themes of reconciliation, faith, and self-knowledge.
- Key Terms: Theme, symbolism, resolution, allegory, coming-of-age (bildungsroman).
- Reading Focus: Ch. 20–22 (Ultima’s death, Antonio’s final dream, the planting of the herbs).
- Writing Prompt: Write a thematic reflection (2–3 paragraphs) on what Antonio learns about balance between opposing worlds. Use at least three literary terms (e.g., symbolism, theme, allegory) in your analysis.
